How much more off grid can you get … and what happens when the river rises (you’ll be surprised!!)?
Imagine starting each each day in the middle of a river! That is exactly the case for anyone staying in this this little house in Drina River, Serbia. It is a beautiful location that is truly off-the-grid and allows it’s owners a place to really get away from it all.
All of the wood and material for this home came over on Kayak and it is a reminder of what a “work horse” our kayaks can be.
This tiny house was built in 1968 by a group of boys who wanted a spot to sunbathe, and instead of settling for the bedrock they decided to build on top of it. The result is this sturdy little structure which, despite appearances, has withstood severe flooding of the Drina River, Serbia, for decades.
Constructed from reclaimed pieces of wood from a nearby shed, the boys had to carry the wood over by kayak, or as with the heavier, taken upstream and allowed to float downstream where they were siphoned off.
For over 40 years, this house on a rock in the middle of a river has withstood floods and harsh weather. A pretty amazing accomplishment and a truly impressive home to live the off-grid lifestyle!
